Choosing the right navigation technology is one of the most critical decisions when deploying an AGV fleet. In this guide, we compare the two most common approaches: LiDAR natural feature navigation and QR code / marker-based navigation.
QR code (or magnetic marker) navigation uses visual or optical sensors to read markers placed on the floor along predefined paths. The robot follows a fixed route, repositioning itself whenever it reads a code.
LiDAR SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) navigation builds a map of the existing environment using laser scanners. The robot localizes itself by matching its real-time sensor readings against the saved map of walls, racks, pillars, and fixed objects.
| Factor | QR Code Navigation | LiDAR SLAM |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment cost | Lower robot, higher floor prep | Higher robot, no floor prep |
| Route flexibility | Low — fixed paths | High — software-defined routes |
| Maintenance | Regular marker replacement | Minimal — self-updating maps |
| Best for | Stable, simple linear transport | Dynamic, multi-zone operations |
Most modern warehouse and manufacturing deployments favor LiDAR natural feature navigation for its flexibility and lower long-term maintenance. At Zhenyu Robotics, all our standard AGV platforms ship with LiDAR SLAM navigation as standard. Talk to our engineers to find the right navigation solution for your facility.
